Ideal for living history or costume use, and popular with theatre and film wardrobes, these hardwearing, warm stockings are knitted from 100% wool on an antique circular sock machine to fit the measurements of your foot.
The stockings are made with a standard cuff approximately 1-1.5 inches deep, but I can also make them with a very narrow turning of about half an inch, or an extra deep cuff which can be folded down to provide an ideal length for kilt hose. The toe and heel are fully fashioned for a comfortable fit.
The stockings are made to come to fractionally over knee height on most people, allowing them to be worn under breeches or have the tops folded down as required. I am happy to make the leg length a bit longer or shorter to suit your build and requirements at no extra charge, though if you would like extremely long stockings to be worn as thigh high hose, this option adds just £2 to your order and can be selected below. I usually suggest choosing the standard or narrow cuff for thigh high stockings.
Please note, this design of sock is best for adult sized feet and legs, if you have extremely slender legs or need children's sizes, we now have an option for these too if you backtrack to the main socks and hose section.
A range of typical colours are listed in the options as an aid to ordering, but please feel free to ask for alternative colours, we usually have a wide range of other shades in and can source other shades of wool if needed. I can send you a link to our usual wool broker's shade card if required to help you make a choice. If you wish to dye stockings yourself, the 'white' yarn is an undyed natural shade and takes dye nicely. The stockings are hard wearing, but all pure wool socks will eventually show wear after repeated use so we include a skein of matching yarn to allow you to reinforce areas of wear as needed.
When ordering, please let me know the length of your foot from heel to toe (inches or centimetres is fine) and I will make the socks to length, I can also work from a shoe size but please remember to tell me whether its a UK or US or EU sizing, they are all a bit different! Please allow up to a couple of weeks for me to make the stockings, I will advise if there is likely to be any delay beyond these, though turnaround is often much faster. The stockings are best handwashed, but if you require machine washable yarn, do ask, I can usually get a fair range of shades in this yarn.
A note on the historic styling of these- whilst the device that makes them is Victorian and they have short row heel constructional details, they are widely found by many re-enactment groups to be useful for Tudor and later costume impressions or for wear with kilts or as boot socks.
One final note, I often get asked to do odd coloured 'pairs' for use by jesters/street theatre or for turning into personalised Christmas stockings, this is fine, just let me know what shades you would like and I am very happy to work in multiple shades. Odd sized pairs are fine too. For hooped (striped) stockings, or ones with a contrasting shade for cuff, heels and toes, please select from the dropdown below. You will have a chance to specify any notes about colour choices in the notes at the checkout page, but do feel free to contact me first if you want to talk through possible options or to check what other shades I can get.
