Oil & Tallow Soft Soap
Thick gel like soft soap in a natural mid beige/brown colour.
This soap is produced by a long boiling process and based on Tudor soap-making methods combining vegetable oil with carefully purified animal fat. Visually, it is identical to the all tallow soaps that were in use in earlier periods, so is also a consideration for those re-enacting any period from the Iron Age onwards, though this specific blend is most accurate for those working with Tudor and later material as this basic recipe then remains unchanged into modern historic periods.
This soap makes excellent ‘camp kitchen’ soap, where it degreases wood, metal, textiles and hands with ease. It is also a favourite with felt makers who find the generous lather and easy to use gel texture a great help. Very economical in use and kind to the hands.
Soft soap becomes thicker as it ages and may need thinning with water before use. This soap often displays 'figging', a sort of snowflake effect caused by stearins within the fats saponifying at a different rate.

Certainly the last batch we sent to the USA by itself got refused, although a single jar as part of a larger order of other items seems to go through customs just fine***
Made in small batches, if it appears as out of stock, do get in touch to remind me to make more!
