Broad Brimmed Monmouth

£65.00
Sold Out

Modeled broadly on the 'Peter the Great' hat held at the Hermitage Museum in Russia and on several hats in National Museum Denmark, Copenhagen.

Also known variously as a Broad Brimmed Monmouth or Boat cap this is a floppy, heavy wool hat knit double thick in pure wool then fulled to be warm and cosy in the foulest of weather, although if I full to the point where the stitch definition begins to vanish we can also achieve a much more rigid effect, this finish is best done in the dyed wools, they tend to full more than the undyed. Its your choice!

A suitable choice for seventeenth century and later re-enactment and a possibility to go with a pirate portrayal. I can do this in a wide range of shades, just let me know what you would like and I'll look out a suitable yarn and we can confirm your choice before I start work. Do let me know if you require any proportions altering for a taller, shorter crown or wider or narrower brim (wider brims tend to be floppy in wear, slightly narrower ones stick out more firmly, plus the amount of fulling makes a difference).

Made to order. The way our order book is currently working, we open the shop approximately once a quarter for new commissions and shut it again once we have as many orders as we think we can realistically make over the next three months or so. Please be aware that your order may fall anywhere into that timescale. We'll always aim to be as prompt as we can
